History of the Glacier Express

Origins and Development

The Glacier Express embarked on its maiden voyage on 25 June 1930, revolutionising rail travel in Switzerland. The train was a collaborative effort between three prominent Swiss railway companies: Visp-Zermatt-Bahn (VZ), Furka Oberalp Bahn (FO) and Rhaetian Railway (RhB). This partnership aimed to create a seamless travel experience from Zermatt to St. Moritz, traversing some of the most challenging and picturesque terrains in the Swiss Alps

Early Years

In the beginning, the Glacier Express operated only during the summer months. The winter months posed significant challenges due to heavy snowfall blocking key passes such as the Furka and Oberalp. The train initially offered a mix of first, second and third-class carriages, along with a dining car service between St. Moritz and Disentis. Electric locomotives powered the VZ and RhB sections, while the FO section used steam engines until its full electrification in the early 1940s

Post-War Period and Technological Advancements

After a hiatus during World War II, the Glacier Express resumed operations in 1948 with renewed vigour. The post-war period witnessed several technological upgrades, including the introduction of new, faster locomotives and enhanced dining services. These improvements significantly reduced travel times and enhanced the overall appeal of the journey.

Milestones and Key Events

Year-Round Service

A significant milestone in the history of the Glacier Express was the completion of the Furka Base Tunnel in 1982. This tunnel enabled year-round operations, making the scenic journey accessible to winter travellers for the first time. This development extended the operational period of the Glacier Express beyond its namesake Rhone Glacier, marking a new era in its history.

Modern Era and Popularity Surge

The 1980s and 1990s marked a period of modernisation and increased popularity for the Glacier Express. The introduction of panoramic cars in the mid-1980s, offering expansive views of the Alpine landscapes, was a game-changer. By the mid-1990s, the Glacier Express had firmly established itself as a premier tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over the world. Investments in infrastructure and rolling stock continued, with the addition of luxury services and packages designed to enhance the travel experience.
