Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz Raises CHF 10,000 for Morteratsch Glacier

The Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz has renovated some of its rooms during the off-season with a focus on sustainability. Instead of discarding the well-preserved, high-quality old furniture, they reused it. In a unique initiative, the hotel team offered guests and the local community the opportunity to purchase luxurious solid wood furniture, lighting elements, decorative items, and high-quality tableware at nominal prices. This action not only gave the furniture a second life but also raised an impressive CHF 12,034.

The hotel is pleased to announce that 25% of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to support the Morteratsch Glacier. This donation from the furniture sale is part of Kempinski’s comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability Projects. In collaboration with BE Health and MortaLive, the Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz has launched a pioneering donation program to combat glacier melting, specifically to protect the Morteratsch Glacier in Pontresina. The hotel already launched the BE Health initiative last December and proudly collected CHF 6,840 during the winter season of 2023/2024. Hotel guests can voluntarily add CHF 1 per night to their bill, with 100% of these contributions going directly to glacier protection projects. This partnership with BE Health and MortaLive underscores the hotel’s commitment to ecological sustainability and preserving natural wonders for future generations.

The official check presentation of CHF 10,000 with Dr. Felix Keller, Managing Director of Mortalife, took place on June 14, 2024, marking a significant contribution to the protection of our natural heritage.

“We are thrilled by the overwhelming response to our furniture sale,” said Alexej Jaritschin, Hotel Manager. “This initiative not only extended the life cycle of our well-preserved furniture but also allowed our guests and community to contribute to a significant environmental cause. The CHF 12,000 raised will directly support MortaLive, an organization dedicated to combating glacier melt and preserving the iconic Morteratsch Glacier.”

The Morteratsch Glacier, a majestic symbol of natural beauty and ecological significance, has been visibly impacted by global warming. Its retreat over recent decades underscores the urgent need for conservation efforts. MortaLive’s innovative projects, such as recycling meltwater for local snow-making to insulate the glacier year-round, offer hope in extending the glacier’s lifespan by up to 50 years.
“This initiative highlights our exceptional commitment to sustainability, seamlessly blending luxury with environmental responsibility,” added Alexej Jaritschin. “We are not just managing a hotel; we are leading a movement to safeguard our planet's future. Our dedication to environmental stewardship is evident in every aspect of our operations. We invite our esteemed guests, employees, and the wider community to join us in this vital cause, making a tangible impact in the fight against glacier retreat.”

The Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz continues to set a new standard for environmental responsibility in the hospitality industry, demonstrating that luxury and sustainability can seamlessly coexist.
