Located at the southern foot of Yuexiu Mountain, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is one of the landmark buildings in Guangzhou. When visiting, you can enjoy not only the exhibitions about Mr. Sun Yat-sen but also the beauty of the building and the famous ancient trees.
The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is an octagonal palace-style building, combining the traditional Chinese palace style with modern Western graphic design. Designers cleverly used the structural principles of building mechanics—the use of a steel frame with reinforced concrete in a mixed structure—to form the 71-metre span of the building’s space without a column. White granite for the base and steps, light blue marble for the wall skirt, milky yellow tiles for the wall body, and a large purple wet-ground column covered with a royal blue glazed tile roof, stacked and comfortable, make it particularly elegant and magnificent.
As the city flower, the kapok is popular in Guangzhou. The King of Kapok is the oldest kapok in the whole city at 300 years old. Every March, lots of kapoks blossom, creating a red glow in the sky.
In addition, the largest Magnolia alba also stands around Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. The two ancient Magnolia albas are guarding the main building like two loyal soldiers. During the blooming season of Magnolia every year, the small white flowers fly throughout to decorate the antique building.
