DELVING INTO THE DIVERSITY OF INDONESIA
Indonesia is home to a kaleidoscope of people and cultures whose history stretches back thousands of years. It is one of the most diverse countries on the planet with over 17,024 islands, 38 provinces, 718 languages and 360 ethnic groups – from Sabang in Sumatra to Merauke in Papua. Despite the immense differences, the country’s diverse cultures, traditions and beliefs are united in harmony, reflecting the national motto of ‘Bhinneka Tunggal Ika’, which translates to Unity in Diversity.
Since 2019, The Apurva Kempinski Bali has been dedicated to showcasing Indonesia’s cultural heritage as part of the guest experience. In 2024, we continue to honour the belief of Unity in Diversity by shining the spotlight on the distinctive essence of Indonesia’s seven main regions: Sumatra, Nusa Tenggara, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua.
A series of bi-monthly programmes have been curated as an integral part of guests’ journey in exploring Indonesia while staying in the resort. The tailored experiences include the arrival rituals unique to each region, their cuisines, indigenous treatments, mystical stories, traditional games and craftsmanship.
CURATED WELLNESS
Central to the vision is the award-winning Apurva Spa, a tranquil haven that continues to solidify its position as Bali’s leading wellness destination. Apurva Spa journey transcends ordinary spa experiences, where the time-honoured rituals masterfully blended with modern techniques to create the most immersive spa experience in Bali. Its heart lies in the Javanese proverb, ‘Rupasampat Wahyabiantara’: “true beauty is achieved when inner and outer beauty are in harmony”. All of the treatments also incorporate traditional healing power of jamu, an all-natural herbal elixir renowned for its restorative benefits, and are complemented by lulur, a traditional scrub infused with indigenous ingredients to nourish the skin and invigorate the senses.
While inspired by traditional healing wisdom, Apurva Spa continues to evolve by embracing science-based approach when crafting the wellness programme. Apurva Spa’s signature treatments are curated to care for the changing physical and mental needs as one progresses through the four stages of life: adolescence, adulthood, married life and post-adulthood. Another highlighted treatment is Awakening the Chakra Spirit, a holistic treatment featuring Balinese purification ritual known as ‘Melukat’. In Balinese tradition, ‘Melukat’ is a sacred ceremony aimed at cleansing the mind, body, and soul. The treatment combines purification of one’s body as a temple of the soul through ‘Melukat’ and clarify the seven chakras from any blockages to restore balance while embracing the present moment, before concluding the treatment with a therapeutic massage.
Other highlighted treatments include Awakening the Chakra Spirit, Agra Shala, Sound Healing Meditation, Numerology, and Pilates Reformer. Ultimately, in the spirit of celebrating Indonesia, a variety of treatments and rituals have been designed to showcase unique techniques, herbal remedies, and healing wisdom from Indonesia’s seven main regions; Sumatra, Java, Nusa Tenggara, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua.

Moreover, bringing more awareness and preserving Indonesia’s forgotten biodiversity continues to be the mission, reflected in food and beverages served throughout the resort. Ultimately, minimising food waste with efforts and efficient practices across all kitchens remains the focus amidst the dynamicity of the resort’s dining offerings.

Through innovative initiatives and a steadfast commitment to sustainability, the resort continues to uphold the highest standards of luxury while honouring Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage, preserving the environment, and supporting local communities. Crafting a greener future in collaborations with similar-minded partners.
Preserving Culture
Paying homage to Indonesian culture and traditions, every aspect of the resort is a true embodiment of Indonesian elegance. Its architecture and design reflect the majestic Indonesian landscape, aesthetics, heritage and craftsmanship.
Likewise, culture preservation is emphasised through the resort’s annual brand campaigns, focusing on collaborating with partners across disciplines to curate unique guest experiences while integrating Indonesia’s culture, tradition and heritage. The uniqueness of Indonesia’s seven main regions is showcased through 2022’s Unity in Diversity campaign, followed by the celebration of Indonesia across disciplines, including the artists for their music, paintings, dance and craftsmanship, through 2023’s Powerful Indonesia campaign. In 2024, Powerful Indonesia: Bhinneka Tunggal Ika campaign celebrated Indonesian way of life through extraordinary experiences focused on sustainability, craftsmanship, and inclusivity. Protecting the Environment
Sustainability is viewed as a commitment to preserving ecosystems for future generations. The Apurva Kempinski Bali is dedicated to environmental sustainability by implementing measures to prevent or mitigate negative impacts, such as reducing emissions, minimising waste, and promoting resource efficiency. Through collaborative efforts with similar-minded partners, eco-conscious initiatives will continue to be implemented which include efforts to adopting cleaner technologies, restoring ecosystems, and ensuring effective waste management.
Being responsible towards carbon footprint is essential to the resort’s commitment for responsible and regenerative tourism, hence the activation of its Decarbonisation programme. The resort is committed to Mangrove Planting which began with 1,000 seedlings in 2024 to support environmental restoration, strengthening ecosystem, and promoting biodiversity. Additionally, the resort calculated the produced carbon from its ‘Path to Sustainable Growth’ event in May 2024 which amounted to 1,447.48 kgCO2e or equal to 121 mangrove seedlings, and offset this with planting 200 seedlings. Moreover, the resort has been partnering with Nissan Indonesia to provide Electric Vehicle Guest Experiences, where guests could explore the Nusa Dua area and a Green Airport Transfer using Nissan’s electric vehicles. Finally, in collaboration with Jejakin, the resort provides a carbon calculator where guests could discover their produced carbon from the trip they have taken and offered an opportunity to offset it with planting trees.
Striving to serve Locally-sourced Ingredients across our eight dining venues, the resort highlights farm-to-table concept. The effort to source products locally led to partnerships with Samsara Living Museum for regenerative farming through Sustainable Agriculture and with Balian Water to serve premium natural mineral water sourced directly from a free-flowing spring on the slopes of Mount Agung. Additionally, the harvested produce from the resort’s Rooftop Hydroponic Garden and sourcing Cage-Free Chicken Egg support the initiative, while the organic wastes from all kitchens are composted by the ‘green team’ for the resort’s gardens. Subsequently, efforts are made to bring more awareness and preserve Indonesia’s Forgotten Biodiversity through the collaboration with Javara Indonesia to highlight these indigenous ingredients.
These initiatives have been recognised internationally through a number of achievements that strengthen the resort’s position as a leader in eco-luxury hospitality. As the first hotel in the country to achieve Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification, it integrates international sustainability standards across its operations. Reaffirmed with earning its Second-year of EarthCheck Silver certification, demonstrating its commitment to reducing environmental footprints and continuously improving sustainability performance. Ultimately, the resort was recognised as the ‘Best Sustainable Hotel’ at the 18th edition of the Ultimate Luxury Travel Related Awards (ULTRAs) held at the prestigious Kensington Palace in London.
